Susanne McHugh, 2024

Susanne McHugh (she/her) is a dancer, choreographer, and mental health advocate living in Queens, New York. A native of the Philadelphia area, Susanne has been living and creating work in NYC inspired by mental health issues since 2014. After growing up pursuing classical ballet, Susanne shifted her focus to modern dance performance and choreography during her teenage years. She went on to study at SUNY Purchase’s Conservatory of Dance before continuing her studies at University of the Arts, graduating in 2014 with a BFA in Dance. In August 2018 Susanne participated in the inaugural Ann & Weston Hicks Choreography Fellows Program at Jacob’s Pillow and has since had residencies hosted by New Dance Alliance, CHEN Dance Center, Mare Nostrum Elements, and Larussa QNZdanz(+) Artist Residency. Susanne’s work has received funding from the NYFA City Corps Grant and the NYFA Barbara and Carl Zydney Grant for Artist with Disabilities. When Susanne is not performing or choreographing, she works full-time on the NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) NYC’s Helpline assisting peers and family members with emotional support and getting them connected to services.
