Star Mitchell, Fall 2025 Space Grant Resident

Star Mitchell (they/them) is a luminous force of rebirth—a transdisciplinary artist and native New Yorker of African American and Colombian descent—boldly walking in their creative audacity. Their work lives at the intersection of the spiritual and the political, where ancestral truths move through everyday gestures. Rooted in the spirit of Sankofa—“Go Back and Get It”—Star creates to reclaim, release, and remember. Collaboration is treated as ceremony, and each project becomes a portal for healing, storytelling, and transformation.

Star’s performances have been featured at Ars Nova, The Shed, Judson Memorial Church, CPR, BAAD!, Princeton University, Abrons Arts Center, and Gibney. Their practice is deeply community-centered, focused on bringing movement as a form of liberation into everyday life. They offer intimacy direction, choreographic support, workshops, creative assistance, and program coordination across a wide range of creative platforms.

They’ve collaborated with DJs Honey B, Kilopatra Jones, and Niyah West, and with musicians like Gladstone Deluxx. Their interdisciplinary reach extends into film through projects with Mark Marques, Cricket Brown, and Kariyanna Colloway. In 2024, Star served as Program Coordinator for The Kinetic Altar Residency, a new artist residency created in partnership with the nonprofit Healing The Black Body, affirming their commitment to artistic care, ceremony, and community wellness.

As a teaching artist, Star currently teaches modern and house dance to students from kindergarten through middle school, sharing movement as a form of self-liberation and personal power. They recently made their Off-Broadway debut at Ars Nova’s ANT Fest (2025), and are a 2025 MODArts Resident and Pioneers Go East NEXT! Mentee. Additional honors include being a 2023 EMERGENYC alum, 2022 CPR Artist-in-Residence, and 2021 City Artist Corps Grant recipient.
