BAX Spaces
The BAX Building at 421 5th Avenue houses four beautiful, well-equipped, multi-purpose studios. We rent our spaces for dance, theater, and performance rehearsals, classes or workshops, meetings, auditions, readings, informal showings, performances, special events, and more.
BAX is roughly one (1) avenue block and 1.5 street blocks away from the 4th Avenue-9th Street F/G/R Subway Station. The building was the original location of Brooklyn Women’s Martial Arts, and is designated as one of NYC’s LGBT Historic Sites!
BAX is on the 2nd and 3rd floors of the building, accessible by stairs with no lift or elevator. However, we are committed to accessibility and make every effort to help folks with mobility challenges reach our space. We can also make a variety of accommodations for needs related to neurodiversity, visual impairment, hearing impairment, and other disabilities. The BAX Annex at 80 Hanson Place is available for rehearsals, lock-out weeks, and additional mission-aligned uses. Located in Downtown Brooklyn/Fort Greene, this location is near the Atlantic Terminal/Atlantic Avenue – Barclay’s Center subway station and Fulton Street.
The BAX Building – 421 5th Avenue, Park Slope
Amenities: Our well-maintained studio spaces include a Bluetooth-compatible sound system, free WIFI, natural and fluorescent lighting, A/C and heat, an Air Filter, and extra cleaning supplies such as disinfectant wipes and hand sanitizer. Renters can access non-gendered bathrooms and filtered cold/hot water fountains on both floors; we have a dressing room on the 2nd floor. Renters can request additional amenities (e.g. tables, music stands, etc.) via this form.
Studios B and C have wall mirrors, and Studio D has two 4 x 6.5 ft rolling mirrors. Portable barres, tables, flooring alternatives, and additional chairs are available upon request. Video projector and theatrical lighting (Studio D only) are available for an additional cost; don’t hesitate to contact rentals@bax.org.
Studio A
Located on the second floor, Studio A is 26.5 feet by 35 feet and features a sprung oak wood floor.
Studio B
Located on the second floor, Studio B is 26 feet by 30 feet and features a sprung oak wood floor and mirrors.
Studio C
Located on the third floor, Studio C is 18 feet by 39 feet and features a hardwood floor and mirrors.
Studio D
Located on the third floor, Studio D/The Theater at BAX is a multi-purpose space that doubles as BAX’s 70 seat performance venue and a rehearsal studio. The rehearsal space is 28 x 42 and features a hardwood floor, two 4 x 6.5 ft rolling mirrors, riser seating, moveable black wrap-around curtains, and lighting equipment.*

The BAX Annex – 80 Hanson Place, Downtown Brooklyn/Fort Greene
The BAX Annex at 80 Hanson Place, newly opened in December 2024, houses a fully accessible 45×19 (865 square-foot) column free studio with sprung floor with black Marley. Additional amenities include bluetooth speakers, two 4 x 6.5 ft rolling mirrors, free WiFi, and a welcome lounge and outdoor garden. This space is available for rehearsals, lock-out weeks, and additional mission-aligned uses. Located in downtown Brooklyn in Fort Greene, this location is near many subway lines at the Atlantic Terminal/Atlantic Avenue Barclays Center subway station and Fulton Street.
