Rania Lee Khalil
Parent Artist Space Grant (Fall 2022)

Rania Lee Khalil makes performances and moving image for live audiences.  Her artworks reflect on the beauty and disappearance of indigenous plant, animal and human (culture)s.  Her embodied research based practice reflects on ecology, third world feminism, post coloniality and healing.

Originally trained in dance, somatic movement and Butoh, Khalil brings a sense of quiet and movement to her moving images.  The daughter of Egyptian immigrants, Rania lives and works within her diasporic community of Bay Ridge Brooklyn, where she facilitates RIZEC, an environmental justice platform with SWANA youth.

Rania’s original works have been seen in places including The Judson Church, Martin Segal Theater, The Ontological-Hysteric Theater and HERE, New York; Aomori Art Museum Japan, Al Ma’mal Contemporary Art Foundation Palestine, Zawya Cinema Egypt, Kiasma Museum for Contemporary Art Finland and the 56th Venice Biennale.  In 2021 she submitted her practice based doctorate at the University of Arts Helsinki on postcolonial ecologies and embodied video making.  Rania teaches part time in the MFA program of Contemporary Art at the New School and is the mother of one daughter.
