Miguel Alejandro Castillo Le Maitre

Miguel Alejandro Castillo Le Maitre (he/him) is a queer, transmodern interdisciplinary artist from Caracas, Venezuela. Named one of Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch” in 2024, he is a Bessie Award–nominated dancer and the 2025–2026 Opera Directing Fellow at the Marcus Institute for Vocal Arts at The Juilliard School. Working across choreography, direction, installation, education, and performance, Castillo creates socially engaged projects that explore diasporic imagination and future folklore. A deep belief in—and insistence on—the possibility of a brighter present drives his creative work.
He has performed in the U.S. and internationally in works by Faye Driscoll, Jeanine Durning, Lena Engelstein, Laurel Jenkins, Daniella Barbarito, and many other brilliant women. Recent choreographic credits include David Lang’s prisoner of the state, commissioned by the New York Philharmonic, the Barbican Centre, and Malmö Opera, and John Adams’ The Gospel According to the Other Mary at the Volksoper in Vienna. He is a cooperating partner of the Pina Bausch Fellowship, collaborating with his 93-year-old grandmother. Residencies and fellowships include danceWEB at ImPulsTanz Festival (2021) and Fresh Tracks at New York Live Arts (2022–23). Castillo holds a BA in Dance and Theatre from Middlebury College and an MFA in Choreography and Performance from Smith College.
