j. bouey (they/them) is a Brooklyn-based Afrofuturistic multimedia dance artist, writer, ethnochoreologist, and community organizer from Los Angeles, by way of the Phoenix Metropolitan Area, documenting oppression resilient dance cultures through choreography and mythopoeia. bouey is a Bessie awardee (2023), founder and host of The Dance Union Podcast, member of the Science of Art, Music, and Brain Activity (S.A.M.B.A.) cohort at Arizona State University where they received their BFA in Dance (2014) and MFA in Dance (Interdisciplinary Digital Multimedia and Performance, 2026).

bouey received a number of international fellowships and residencies in support of the presentation of their work, including the Jerome Foundation, Movement Research, ImPulsTanz, Gibney Dance, CPR – Center for Performance Research, Bogliasco Foundation, QAM – Queer Art Mentorship, Dance and Performance Institute of Trinidad and Tobago, the Jonah Bokaer Foundation, the Ellis-Beuregard Foundation, and Dancing While Black. bouey has presented their original work at JACK, Odeon Theater, Madhura Studios, New York Live Arts, Judson Church, and more.

As the Artistic Director of J. Bouey Dance Projects, bouey leads a series of multimedia productions and ethnographic studies under the project name SATURN, an artistic commitment to crafting stories that nurture futuristic optimism through dance and the authentic embodiment of joy, heroism, and liberation.
