BAX/Brooklyn Arts Exchange seeks an hourly part-time Education Programs Apprentice to join the BAX team. The Education Programs Apprentice is a hands-on position playing a vital role in the execution of our School Pick Up Program as well as assisting teaching artists in dance, tumbling, and drama classes. The Apprentice will also be asked to take on discrete administrative and production tasks, help with day to day logistics, and support in community building of BAX’s on site Education Programs. This role is co-supervised by the Manager of Education Programs, Lily Ali-Oshatz and the Education Programs Associate.

Please note that BAX’s Education Department operates on a seasonal programming schedule that aligns with the public school year, September-June. The Education Programs Apprentice will therefore be contracted on a weekly hourly schedule from September 2024-June 2025 (approximately 12-13 hours per week). Training will begin the week of September 23, 2024.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Education Programs Apprentice provides general administrative and hands on support to the Education Department, specifically in the following areas of programming:

    • Assisting in weekday School Pick Up program (school pick up, activity prep, facilitation and student supervision, etc.);
    • Providing hands-on support as an assistant to BAX faculty, including set-up and breakdown of studio classes (e.g. setting up tumbling mats, props, etc.);
    • Providing hands-on support during Education Department events and performances (including, but not limited to, Fall Open House, Open Classes for Family Observation, and Student Concerts, and Faculty cohort meetings and/or Professional Development sessions);
    • Helping to maintain and keep tidy education spaces, supplies, costumes and props;
    • Maintaining BAX Building bulletin boards and community engagement projects, aligned with BAX’s mission and the Education Department Core Values;
    • Assisting the Education Department in various administrative tasks that support all BAX Education programs.

Fall Apprentice regular weekly schedule will be as follows with some flexibility depending ideal candidate’s availability and/or BAX class support needs:

    • Mondays 1:30-5:45pm
    • Wednesdays 1:30-5:45pm
    • Thursdays 1:30-5:45pm

This schedule may be subject to slight changes over the course of the term/year per advanced discussion with and approval by your supervisors. Additionally, you will provide hands-on support during Education Department events, potentially starting with BAX’s Saturday, September 28 Open House from 11-3PM (TBC), and including particularly Family Open Studios (Week of November 18th during normal class periods) and End of Term Class Open Studios (January 21st-27th, 2025 during normal class periods) these are required as part of the apprenticeship. If/when this falls outside of your regularly scheduled hours, we will develop a mutually agreed upon schedule. Exact details for these events (dates/times) TBC.

$16/hour

QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate for this role has a passion for working with youth, experience in arts education, and alignment with BAX’s anti-oppression and pro-inclusion mission. Crucial to the success of this position is someone who is self-motivated, curious to learn about arts administration, compassionate, and enjoys working in a fast and highly collaborative environment.   • Bachelor’s Degree or related work experience in the performing arts, arts education, and/or nonprofits;
  • Direct experience with working with children in school/community, caregiver, or teaching artist settings;
  • Knowledge of Google Suite (Drive, Docs, Sheets, Sites, etc.) and/or Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, etc.);
  • Knowledge of CRM platforms such as Salesforce, Amilia, Active are a plus;
  • Spanish speaking is a plus.

TIMELINE
