David Vining & Karen Grenke | Cagey Productions
Parent Artist Space Grant (2014/2015)
Cagey Productions is Karen Grenke and David Vining and was founded in 2001 to create opportunities for emerging theatre artists. Cagey received a 2014 Parent/Artist Grant from BAX/Brooklyn Arts Exchange and used it to write the first draft of their current project, 74. Cagey’s “trippy, episodic riff on the Electra myth” (Time Out), The Blue Puppies Cycle, was produced at venues across New York including The Chocolate Factory, The Ontological, Dixon Place and The Brick. Cagey’s The Zombie Chronicles received a Space Grant from BAX and was a featured piece at Tiny Theatre. Over the past decade, Cagey has created theatre and video at HERE Arts Center, the 14th Street Y, Arts in the Parks, Puppet Playhouse, The Metropolitan Playhouse, and online.
In 2011 Cagey went on hiatus to focus on their personal production, twins. During this time, Karen and David worked independently on outside productions with The Nerve Tank, Peculiar Works Project, and Melanie Jones. Cagey also spent the time contemplating the high cost of childcare. As their twins grew, they were thrilled to bring them into the studio and return to making art together. David and Karen hosted the Making Art While Parenting panel at BAX and continue to brainstorm and generate creative ways to be parent-artists. Sometimes they just play.
