School Pick Up Service
BAX is an intergenerational space that provides performing arts youth studio classes Monday-Thursday following school hours and Saturdays. We provide School Pick up services to select local schools and schools with whom we have longstanding arts partnerships; we are not a full service after school program.
A member of the BAX School Pick Up Team (made up of trained BAX staff, faculty, and interns) will meet your child at dismissal time at their school and escort them to the BAX Building for their after school studio class(es). Upon arrival at BAX, we provide supervised space for children to wait for their BAX studio class to begin. BAX provides a number of games, activities, and coloring/drawing materials for this time and students are encouraged to do their homework, read quietly, and/or participate in these activities. Students are also encouraged to pack a snack to eat before their class begins. BAX can provide simple snacks such as fruit bars if a student does not bring their own from home. Students must be picked up promptly at the end of their last studio class.

Program Details & Logistics
BAX offers an excellent child to adult ratio to ensure the quality and safety of our School Pick UP experience. Therefore, we can only commit to as many school pick ups as we have the staff resources to accommodate.
A minimum of three students is needed to confirm a day of pick up at a particular school. We also consider a range of factors including, but not limited to, student age and wait-times at BAX before class when determining the suitability and sustainability of any pick-up arrangement. If the minimum number of students is not met, that particular pick up may be cancelled and any fees paid towards that pick up will be refunded.
A pick up is NOT confirmed until you have received an explicit email confirmation and a contract from BAX’s Education Department. BAX will confirm pick-up requests in advance of the start of Fall classes. Once your pick up is confirmed, you will receive an pick up Contract, including a Travel Permission, which must be signed and returned 48 hours before your child(ren)’s first pick up. Families will also pay the remaining balance of the Pick Up fee with the return of their contract.
BAX does NOT pick up before the regularly scheduled school dismissal time (early dismissal days, parent/teacher conferences). We follow the Department of Education’s calendar including holidays, school breaks, etc. You are expected to communicate any unique school closed or early dismissal days specific to your child(ren)’s school to the BAX Education Department.
Students should pack their own snack to eat upon arrival to BAX and before their studio class. In the event that a student forgets their snack on a particular day, BAX will be able to provide a simple snack.
Students must be picked up promptly at the conclusion of their BAX class. Late pick up beyond class time is not available.
Fall 2023 School Pick Up Rates:
- PS 118, PS 39, and PS 321 (walk): $185 per child for weekly pick up for the duration of the semester.
- BNS and PS 130 (walk + subway ride): $200 per child for weekly pick up for the duration of the semester.
When registering for your Fall 2023 semester class, families can add on a School Pick Up deposit of $100 to their registration. Once pick up is confirmed, the remaining balance will be due.
BAX’s 5% multi-person discount will apply to pick up fees for families who have more than one child participating in pick up.
Families receiving scholarship subsidy will have their same subsidy percentage applied to Pick Up fees.
Philosophy of Caretaking
Whether you are new to BAX School Pick Up, or are a long time participant, please know that community and well-being are central priorities in all that we do in BAX Youth Education, including the physical, social, and emotional health of our students.
We practice radical hospitality and strive to go beyond the promise of welcoming children and families into the BAX home to meet people where they are. The success of this practice hinges upon cultivating reciprocal relationships. And just as we aim to meet our students with respect and kindness, we expect BAX students to be mindful and caring of our space, faculty, and staff. Specifically, this includes showing respect for BAX teacher and facilitator voices, class cultures and lessons, and physical boundaries (both peoples’ bodies and the building’s spaces).
To succeed in this work, we believe strongly in our parent/caregiver partnerships and that continuous dialogue ensures that our students have the most successful and healthy experience possible at BAX. Through this collective care-taking, we hope to reinforce more mutual and genuine exchanges, creativity, and FUN together!
