Chala June, 2024

Chala June (they/he/she) is a genderqueer Congolese-American storyteller and multidisciplinary artist based in Brooklyn. Using writing, performance, and food as their primary mediums, Chala’s work seeks to uplift and champion Black and queer cultural identity to examine as integral parts of our collective understanding of the sacred and divine. Born and raised in the DC metro area, Chala graduated from Emerson College with a BA in Writing, Literature, and Publishing from Emerson College in 2018 and moved to New York soon thereafter. In 2021, Chala became the first openly trans editor at Bon Appétit magazine, and in 2023 they were named on Cherry Bombe’s inaugural “Future of Food 50” list. Chala’s otherworldly drag persona, Pisces Moon, has performed in some of New York’s most iconic queer nightclubs including 3 Dollar Bill and Club Cumming and shared the stage with legendary NYC drag artists such as Sasha Velour and Murray Hill. Chala’s creative works are built upon a fundamental belief that storytelling and art making are liberatory forms of emotional and spiritual catharsis.
