Four exceptional artists are provided with an artistic home base for a one-two year period giving them a
tangible sense of permanence and place. Resident artists have the use of four spaces suitable for theater,
dance and performance work and are offered up to 200 hours of free rehearsal space, a stipend, formal
presentations of new works and works in progress, and administrative and technical support. Opportunities are
also available to curate, teach in the public schools, and to work with BAX's student population.
2009-2010 AIRs
AIR's participate in bi-monthly meetings and artist forums facilitated by Executive Director, Marya Warshaw. The meetings with BAX Executive Director and BAX Press & Marketing Associate focus on goals for the individual or independent company. Current goals include the development of new audiences, selected philanthropic support, outreach to additional diverse communities, and for all artists, the support to go deeper and get helpful feedback for their work. In addition to these regular administrative meetings, Resident artists and Marya Warshaw meet bi-monthly as a group to explore shared issues and to look at and give feedback on their creative work. 2009-2010 Artist Advisors Artist Advisors provide support to new resident artists, serve as season curators and advise Executive Director Marya Warshaw on programmatic and artistic direction for the organization. Both Artist Advisors will show works in progress during the season. Artists are selected through an application and panel process one time per year. Applications are available to New York City Residents only and are generally available in mid-late March. The program begins in July for an initial one-year period. Former BAX Artists in Residence have included Martha Bowers, Melissa Briggs, Charles Dennis, Baraka de Soleil, Faye Driscoll, Allison Farrow, Imani Henry, Shannon Hummel, Audrey Kindred, Young Jean Lee, Fernando Maneca/MANOISECA, Dean Moss, Peggy Peloquin, Rubí Theater Company, George Emilio Sanchez, Judith Sloan, Ivan Talijancic, Donna Uchizono, Reggie Wilson, Christalyn Wright, Nami Yamamoto, and Yasuko Yokoshi. The Artist in Residence and Space Grant Programs are supported, in part, with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts and NYC Department of Cultural Affairs and with private funds from the Harkness Foundation for Dance, ĘThe Andrew W. Mellon Foundation New York Theater Program, Mertz-Gilmore Foundation, the New York Times Company Foundation Fund for Midsize Theaters, a project of ART/NY and the Lila Acheson Wallace Theater Fund, established in the New York Community Trust by the founders of The Reader's Digest Association.
